This is Journey.
More than an appliance, more than software, more than a network.
Journey is a service-based IP video transport platform that intelligently combines innovative technology with advanced network management to provide a level of performance significantly higher than any other product on the market.
We think differently.
True innovation requires a completely fresh perspective. Early aviators built machines with flapping wings, like birds — and stayed firmly on the ground. A man named George Cayley abandoned the traditional approaches and focused his thinking on fixed-wing aerodynamics. In doing so, human flight finally took off, and George Cayley became one of the most important pioneers in aeronautics history.
When it comes to IP video transport over the internet, we at Journey also choose to think differently. First, we assembled a development team of experts not just in information technology, but also in broadcast engineering and production. Like our clients, we know IP video transport is about more than just bits on a wire. It’s about having a deep understanding of the entire live broadcast production and transmission environment, and how IP transport fits into that environment.
Then, we threw out all the traditional assumptions and conventions in IP video transport technology. We tried new methods, algorithms, and paradigms that hadn’t been done before. And soon, we had developed a platform that far surpasses any other internet video transport option in the market in flexibility, adaptability, reliability, and video quality.
We understand these are impressive claims from a company you’ve probably never heard of before. But then again — you’ve probably never heard of George Cayley before, either.
The Journey Story
So what makes Journey so different?
First, all Journey equipment is deployed by subscription. What does this mean? First and foremost, no capital expenditure is ever required. Continuous online upgrades and improvements for ultimate future-proofing. 100% coverage on service, support, maintenance, repair, and replacement. Bottom line: worrying about equipment obsolescence just became, well, obsolete.
Journey appliances are startlingly simple to deploy. In most cases, just connect the appliance to power, internet, and video, and you’ll be up and running in just a few minutes. Journey doesn't need a dedicated or static IP, or any special firewall rules. It reaches outbound to the Internet and conquers the most troublesome first- and last-mile connections.
And once the appliance is online, things start to get really interesting.
The Journey Transport appliance is more than a box — it’s a shapeshifter. The Journey platform literally rewrites the function of the hardware with every single booking to meet the specific needs of that booking. The result is a level of flexibility and adaptability that’s been unheard of — until now.
First, it’s an encoder and decoder. The standard appliance has four HD-SDI ports which can be independently wired as either inputs or outputs; the unit can encode or decode up to four channels of video in any combination you wish on a per-booking basis.
The heart of Journey is in transport, so of course the appliance functions as a transmitter and receiver of proprietary Journey Transport streams. Journey’s modular software design means that it also works with your own encoders and decoders, processing standard MPEG-TS streams for encrypted Journey transmission over the public internet and other packet-switched networks.
Finally, any Journey Transport unit can be pressed into service at any time as a “transponder” — a distribution or repeater point in the Journey network. Every single booking has a custom-designed path that maximizes throughput and minimizes routing delays and packet loss.
Sounds great, you say, but let’s get down to business. How’s the video quality? Glad you asked.
“That looks amazing. I never doubted it would look good, but wow.”
NBC SPORTS | on their First look at Journey
Every single aspect of the Journey platform was built from the ground up with an intense focus on accomplishing one goal — unparalleled quality and performance in delivering low-latency, broadcast-quality video over the public internet.
Journey’s proprietary transport algorithms have advanced error correction and data recovery protocols to deliver seamless broadcast-quality video with high reliability, while Journey hardware is strategically deployed to create a dynamic network of “transponders” to deliver streams with the most efficiency and the lowest latency possible.
All streams are transported with deterministic latency, even across appliances. So you can deliver any number of video channels in frame-accurate synchronization with each other, across town or across the globe — perfect for at-home production applications.
Autopilot is Not Enough
On its own, Journey technology is already superior to any other black box on the market, but we didn’t stop there. Journey engineers in our 24/7 Network Operations Center actively monitor and manage every Journey transmission, adjusting to real-time conditions. Why do we do this? Well, it’s like autopilot. A plane can have the most sophisticated autopilot technology available, but would you get on without a pilot? It’s the same with internet-based video transmission — it takes an intelligent combination of advanced technology and human oversight to excel. It takes Journey.
Any Way You Want It
When it comes to operations and logistics, everyone’s workflow is different. You may want to book and manage your own feeds. Or, you may just want to make a phone call and have the peace of mind knowing that it’s taken care of. However you work, we have administrative solutions that will work best for you. But no matter what, remember that Journey is a service. We’ll always provide concierge-level customer service and support.
And for even more flexibility, the Journey network is co-located at leading fiber hubs for convenient interconnection to fiber, satellite, and more.
